What is a cavity?
When the foods and drinks we consume come into contact with mouth bacteria, a chemical reaction ensues and acid is produced. This acid can damage enamel (the white areas of teeth) and lead to decay. When decay is left to flourish, a microscopic hole begins to develop in the enamel – otherwise known as a cavity – and as the hole grows, it provides the opportunity for infection and ongoing decay to develop. As a result, the tooth is weakened, and, if not treated, can lead to pain and even extraction.
While you may not have any symptoms initially, as a cavity progresses, here are signs to watch for:
- tooth sensitivity
- discomfort or pain when chewing on food
- sensitivity or pain when consuming foods or drinks that are cold, hot, or sweet
- discoloration on a tooth’s surface
- pain that seems to suddenly arise.
How can you prevent cavities?
Follow a dedicated at-home hygiene plan and visit us bi-annually for checkups and cleanings! Also ensure that you’re brushing twice and flossing once daily and eating a nutritious diet.
What increases my risk of developing cavities?
- A diet high in sugary foods, snacks, and drinks.
- Lacking dental hygiene habits.
- Tooth position. Decay is more likely to occur in your premolars and molars.
- An inadequate amount of fluoride – a naturally-occurring mineral – can allow cavity-causing bacteria to flourish. Adequate amounts, on the other hand, can completely reverse early damage.
- A mouth that doesn’t produce enough saliva and feels dry.
- Anorexia and bulimia.
- Conditions like acid reflux or GERD.
What material options are available for dental fillings?
- Composite (white) fillings, which match the shade of natural teeth and can be used in areas that are noticeable when you smile, as well as on molars.
- Amalgam (silver) fillings, which are commonly used to treat larger cavities in the molars region.
- Gold fillings, which are durable and a go-to option for some patients.
